The word “random”
The word “random” comes from the Latin “alea,” which means “die” or “game of dice.” In ancient Rome, “aleator” was the dice player, and “aleatoris” were the gaming houses. The outcome of the dice throw was uncertain, which is at the root of the current meaning of random, something that depends on chance or luck. The expression “Alea jacta est” (The die is cast), attributed to Julius Caesar, also comes from this origin.
